The main functionality differences are as follows: What are the main functionality differencesin the packages? These two questions may be best answered in a video (below), but I wanted to take a stab at answering them in this post first.ġ.

One of the most common questions from our users is “What is the difference between the three SolidWorks packages (Standard, Professional, Premium)?” This is often followed by “When does it make sense to upgrade from Standard to Professional or Premium?” The answer really depends on many factors, and we have a complex matrix to outline every feature in each package, but the matrix is…well…complicated, so I wanted to share a brief description of the three packages, as well as two easy ways to figure out which is best for you.

It will be cheaper than a full blown license, but still expensive. One of the most common questions from our users is: “What is the difference between the three SolidWorks packages (Standard, Professional, Premium)?” The answer really depends on many factors… Dassualt Systems is moving to SAS (software as a service) similary to 0ffice 365 and will be selling monthly subscription service. Lastly, 3Dexperience platform is going to get out of beta at some point. The latest versions of SW don't even come in a CD anymore, everything is through download. Modern versions all require online activation.

Older versions of SW could be activated with a software key that was provided by the VAR. So in the event that the unit crashes you won't have any way of restoring the software back because you won't be able to reactivate it. Only problem is that you aren't getting a formatted PC so there is always security risk and you won't be able to upgrade that license or get support. The SW license is usually worth more than the PC it self. Some of these pop up from time to time on Ebay and craigslist. If you'd like to get a legit SW license, there is the option to buy a PC w/ the software installed and activated second hand. Meaning you bought someone's entire business, not just their stuff or their services. The only time they will assist you in transferring an existing license is if you acquire the entire business entity. Solidworks won't allow you to activate a second hand license just because you bought an old CD and swear it wasn't a copy. HOWEVER, duplication of software is not legal. Yes, you can buy a used version of SW (technically). Once you sell something to someone they can do what they want with it including reselling it. Software, like anything else is subject to the first sale doctrine. So, I thought I'd ask the community to see. I had asked my VAR this question back some time ago and they responded with saying they didn't believe that buying an out-of-date copy was available anywhere.

As long as it comes with the newest patch for its version, I won't need a subscription service. So, I was wondering if there was anywhere that can, legally, sell an older version of Solidworks (2017, 2018.) at a price that would be more acceptable for my quest. However, the price tag for a copy of Premium is, well.a premium price. I know there are other software systems that are more geared to structural design, but I am familiar with Solidworks and would like to keep it that way. I would really like to purchase a copy of Solidworks Premium (I will be doing some structural design and would like to be able to run FEA). But, I do not like doing that for several reasons. I have done a few things here and there by just remoting in to my work computer to use Solidworks. I have an opportunity to make some decent side money doing some freelance engineering.
